Akira Kurosawa’s international breakthrough, Rashomon, is a haunting tale of a violent encounter told through the radically different testimonies of a bandit, a samurai’s wife, a woodcutter, and even the spirit of the dead samurai himself. With each retelling, the truth becomes murkier, challenging our assumptions about memory, morality, and objectivity.
The film stars the magnetic Toshirō Mifune, in one of his most iconic roles, as the unpredictable bandit. His intense, physical performance helped establish him as one of the great actors of world cinema and marked the beginning of his legendary collaboration with Kurosawa.
Rashomon introduced the world to Japanese cinema, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and an honorary Academy Award. It also gave rise to the term “Rashomon effect,” now used in psychology, journalism, and law to describe contradictory accounts of the same event. A visually stunning and philosophically rich milestone in film history.
